Cambridge International AS & A Level · 9700
Cambridge A Level Biology 9700 topical past papers
Cambridge International AS & A Level Biology (9700) is taken by students aged about 16 to 19, often alongside chemistry and with medicine, life sciences or veterinary courses in view. The AS Level studies cell structure, biological molecules, enzymes, membranes and transport, the mitotic cell cycle, nucleic acids and protein synthesis, transport in plants and mammals, gas exchange, infectious diseases and immunity. The A Level turns to energy and respiration, photosynthesis, homeostasis, control and coordination, inheritance, selection and evolution, classification, biodiversity and conservation, and genetic technology.

Revising Biology 9700 by topic
Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper and Paper 2 a paper of structured questions, both on the AS content, and Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, is an examination carried out in the laboratory; together they make up the AS Level. For the full A Level, candidates also take Paper 4, structured questions on the A Level content that require the AS material too, and Paper 5, Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, a written paper on experimental design and the statistical treatment of data. The current syllabus applies to examinations in 2025, 2026 and 2027.
- Paper 4's extended answers gather in respiration, photosynthesis, homeostasis and control and coordination, where marks go to processes told in the right order with the right terms. Practise these chapters with the mark scheme beside you and check that every step you wrote appears in it.
- Several topics carry calculations the syllabus expects you to perform: actual size and magnification with an eyepiece graticule in cell structure, the chi-squared test in inheritance, and the t-test and Hardy–Weinberg principle in selection and evolution. Work through the structured questions in those chapters until you can set each one out without prompting.
- Momentum's gas exchange chapter keeps an older name, Gas exchange and smoking, and some of its questions ask about tobacco smoke and lung disease, which the current syllabus no longer includes. Concentrate on the structure and function of the gas exchange system and leave the smoking questions aside.
- Multiple-choice questions on cell structure, biological molecules and transport often depend on reading an electron micrograph or a diagram. Practise identifying structures quickly from Paper 1, then use Paper 2 questions on the same chapter to explain what you have identified.
- Paper 5 questions are written exercises built on experiments from any topic, so practise them for the skills: identifying variables and controls, choosing a statistical test such as Spearman's rank or Pearson's correlation, and evaluating the data, rather than for the biology of the context.
Practising in Momentum
- Every question in a chapter as one list, from every paper and year in the bank, newest first or shuffled.
- Each question turns over to its own part of the mark scheme, where the board published one.
- Narrow by paper, year, session, zone and marks, and star the questions worth keeping.
- Pick chapters, a number of questions and a time, and the exam builder draws a mock to sit and mark.
Past-paper questions and mark schemes are the copyright of Cambridge International. Momentum shows them to signed-in learners for revision and does not publish them on these pages.
